About Us

Swinburne is a progressive university that aims to increase Australia's capacity in science, technology and innovation. We are committed to quality teaching and learning outcomes, and our courses offer students the skills and knowledge that employers want.

For our students, this means providing access to high-quality teaching, exposure to high-impact global research, and taking benefit from active engagement with both industry and the community. The aim is for our students to graduate with valuable and sought-after skills, knowledge and experiences, so they are in demand by employers, and closer to starting a successful career.

To pursue this aim, curriculum is industry-engaged and industry-informed. We also employ only highly qualified and credentialed academic staff, with relevant knowledge and experience in the fields they teach. Their impact on students has been consistently recognised by the Good Universities Guide, with some of the highest ratings for teaching quality, graduate satisfaction and generic (employability) skills. Our teachers make themselves available to students, in class, around campus or online, and contribute to the hands-on learning approach that complements their studies.

Focused and selective, our research underpins and invigorates all our activities and ensures the university contributes to and influences the advancement of the fields in which it is engaged. Swinburne has particular research strengths in: business, design, engineering, information and communication technologies, life and health sciences, physical and chemical sciences, and social sciences.

Swinburne has campuses in the inner and outer-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and one in Sarawak, Malaysia. Swinburne's main campus in Hawthorn is just 8km from the centre of the city, just 10 minutes by direct train. It is set among the cafes, boutiques and bookshops of a vibrant business, retail and residential area, with the convenience of supermarkets and the train station.

A truly international institution, Swinburne has developed partner relationships with more than 90 universities around the world, and has been teaching at its Sarawak campus in Malaysia for more than 10 years. We encourage our students to undertake an international learning experience as part of their course.
