RMIT University - School of Computer Science and Information Technology

The School of Computer Science and Information Technology is one of Australia's largest and leading computing schools. RMIT students from the College of Science, Engineering and Health consistently rank the school very highly in terms of best learning and teaching experience. The school has over 50 PhD students. Each year, Australian universities collectively award a single prize to the best computer science based PhD thesis. The school's PhD students have been awarded half the Australia-wide prizes in the last four years.

About Us

The school is distinguished in four disciplines that produce world-renowned research attracting significant grants from the Australian Government and industry groups: distributed systems and networking, information storage, analysis and retrieval, intelligent systems, and distributed software engineering and
architecture. See www.rmit.edu.au/compsci/research for further details.

Graduates develop comprehensive technical expertise as well as strong communication and leadership skills. RMIT is known for its ability to deliver work-ready degrees that do not over-focus on theory. Currently, close to 90% of our graduates find immediate employment.

Industry partnerships
Our strong links with industry leads to real-world problem solving. Strong industry partnerships with large IT leaders such as Agilent Technologies, ANZ, Dimension Data, the Marlo Group, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Infosys, Microsoft and Oracle, bring leading professionals to deliver development programs and recruit graduates. The two year postgraduate program through yoursoftware.com.au transmits real-world experience to students at that level.

Student Services

International students encounter a unique support infrastructure through schoolbased teaching and learning advisors, who assist with learning support, cultural acclimatisation... just about anything. Security Services offers assistance to students, staff and visitors attending the university and its campuses. A specific orientation for Computer Science and IT students is held twice annually.

Software engineering includes a one year industry placement. Computer science degrees have larger core components. Information technology degrees are more flexible with a smaller core. The Bachelor of Technology degree is the choice for students articulating from other postsecondary studies, as it provides maximum credit and can be packaged with the Master of Computing degree. An honours degree for students continuing to a PhD and five year double degrees combined with engineering are offered.

Postgraduate
A range of tailored programs, ranging from six months to two years are offered, including:

  • Master of Information Technology for those with strong and practical computing skills.
  • Master of Computing - from IT or any other discipline, ideally suited to those who want to improve their existing IT skills without re-learning what they know, or add IT to their undergraduate discipline.
  • Master of Technology (Internet and Web Computing) - from any discipline, including IT.
  • Master of Computer Science - a two year degree which extends other masters programs through yoursoftware.com.au with specialisations in computer security, bioinformatics, intelligent systems, networked and distributed systems, search engines, software engineering, and web-based computing.
  • Master of Technology (Enterprise Architecture) - for IT industry professionals with three to five years experience as project managers and/or team leaders.
