About Us
Primary and secondary education
The Department of Education and Training provides high quality education for primary and secondary students.
The Department recognises that international student programs enrich the educational experience for both the local and overseas students. These programs provide cultural diversity, which leads to greater understanding and tolerance in the world.
It has a student centered approach to learning and students are taught the skills of how to learn which encourages problem solving and self motivated learners. All students are encouraged to achieve the highest standards of learning possible, so that they are equipped to deal effectively with opportunities and challenges they encounter in a changing world.
A pre-requisite for all teachers is a four year tertiary qualification and registration with the Western Australian College of Teachers.
The ratio of students to teachers is on average 15:8 in primary schools and 12:1 in secondary schools and colleges.
Primary school students are encouraged to enrol in their local school so that they become part of the school community. There are over 23 secondary senior high schools, colleges and campuses approved to enrol international students. Parents select the most appropriate school for their child.
The Department currently welcomes students from 36 countries in its international student program.
Student Services
Quality educational facilities
All schools in Western Australia are coeducational (both boys and girls) and have excellent facilities and support programs for overseas students. Schools have an Overseas Student Coordinator who is responsible for their welfare and academic programs.
In addition to general teaching classrooms and administrative areas, secondary schools have fully equipped science laboratories, large libraries with an extensive collection, multimedia resources and study areas, facilities for visual and performing arts, fully fitted workshops for technology subjects, including business studies, materials, systems and food technology.
Schools are networked to provide students and staff with access to computers and online programs from their classrooms and study areas. With the ratio of the number of computers available for students, the use of learning technologies in all aspects of school life is extensive.
Gymnasiums, tennis courts and spacious grassed playing fields provide for students' recreational and sporting needs.
Courses
Curriculum
Primary students study across eight learning areas: mathematics, science, English, the arts, technology and enterprise, society and environment, health and physical education and languages other than English. Lower secondary years (8-10) students maintain continuity of learning across these learning areas with a strong focus on the development of knowledge and skills. Upper secondary students (11-12) chose a range of accredited subjects. They select their program according to their interests and aspirations.
Canning and Tuart Senior Colleges
For over 26 years international students have enrolled in university preparation courses at Tuart and Canning Senior Colleges.
The pre-university programs they offer are recognised for entry to universities throughout Australia and internationally. The staff at each Senior College is devoted to helping students achieve their goals in education and beyond.
Pathways to university
There are four pathways available for international students to gain entry to university.
- The Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)-students select a study program for Years 11 and 12 and sit examinations in the courses at the end of Year 12.
- The Western Australian Universities Foundation Program (WAUFP) is a one year course of academic study for entry in four universities in Western Australia. The program is designed for international students who do not have a strong English background. WAUFP is a parallel program to the WACE and follows the same curriculum. Students can enrol in WAUFP instead of doing Year 12 at a secondary school.
- Students enter a TAFE College after Year 11 or 12 and complete diploma or advanced diploma programs. Students usually get advanced standing or credit transfers when they enrol at a university.
- Edith Cowan University (ECU) Portfolio offers a portfolio entry after Year 12 which involves assessment of applicants based on evidence of ability to succeed in higher education.
