The English Language Centre (ELC) offers flexible, practical study options to enhance your English skills at all language levels: beginner to advanced. Small classes mean teachers provide one-onone assistance and a supportive learning environment. When you finish your English course you can continue your studies in Australia at CIT or at university.
Our ELC teachers:
- love teaching English! Many have taught overseas, so they understand international student needs are highly qualified with postgraduate or masters degrees really care and want students to be successful, happy and healthy - they look after students like family, providing high levels of support to meet individual needs; use accelerative teaching methods that facilitate rapid improvement; and encourage students to develop confidence in using English.
ELC language labs are equipped with specialised computer software and staff dedicated to the development of the individual's language ability, who prepare
them for further study.
Subjects included:
- speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
- cross-cultural communication
- developing all aspects of English language and building confidence to use English in practical situations through excursions to tourist sites and special events in Canberra, taking part in themed learning activities (such as popular music, film and leisure activities) and having guest speakers. Interaction with local English-speaking CIT students gives students the opportunity to use the new language skills they are learning.
We provide a rewarding study experience at a convenient location at the Reid CIT campus in the city, which is within walking distance of stylish cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as many of Canberra's famous attractions.
Student Services
The International Services Unit (ISU) assists students with any issues experienced while studying at CIT, such as stress, fitting in and adjusting to their new lifestyle. Staff access services to assist you with academic support, appeals, attendance, credit transfer, discrimination and resource support.
Airport reception and CIT accommodation are available by arrangement through ISU. Choose from on-campus or off-campus student residences, or homestay.
All residences are located close to public transport and shopping centres and are within 20 minutes of our campuses. Other services include:
- 24-hour computer laboratories
- library and research facilities
- learning support centres
- counselling services
- gym and recreational facilities
- regular exhibitions of students' work including music concerts; fashion runway shows; art, photography and graphic design gallery displays; and more
- student association (CITSA) - student events, entertainment, canteens, cafes, bookshops, advocacy and referral to CIT and community services.
Courses
- elementary English language skills certificate 1, 2, 3 or 4 in English language skills (basic to advanced)
- certificate 4 in academic English
- certificate 4 in spoken and written English (further studies)
- course in foundations studies.
CIT is currently offering elementary English and certificates I-IV in English language skills at a discounted cost.

The English Language Centre (ELC) at CIT has many classes and I find that the staff are professional and offer you lots of support with your studies. I joined the ELC when I saw my friend's language had improved. That gave me the push to study English here. CIT has helped me to find out about the English language, Australian culture and skills, so I am happy. In my classes there are a lot of students who come from many countries to study English, so I have lots of friends and it helps me to practice my English skills. Now my language is improving and I am so happy studying in Canberra; it is a lovely city. My hope is to go on to study my academic course at CIT and then follow on to university.
